Group Meeting 2012
The Blackwater Spring Group Meeting
The Community Centre in Feering was decorated with yellow and green bunting on Thursday 26th April 2012 when Kelvedon hosted this year's meeting. They were assisted by Goldhanger, Little Totham & Tolleshunt Knights, Tollesbury, Tolleshunt D’arcy and Tiptree. Over one hundred and forty members and guests were present including WI Advisor Dorothy Gray and members from Feering.
The speaker for the evening was Christine Walkden, television presenter and The One Show’s gardening guru who told of the making of the television programme ‘Christine’s Garden’ using slides and amusing anecdotes. Well known for her passion and enthusiasm for all plants she encouraged us to grow whatever we like. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what it is called, if its a rare plant or a so called weed – if you admire it then keep it.
So far this year Christine told us that she has sown two hundred packets of seed without the aid of a greenhouse. All of these were propagated either on a window sill or on the dining room table near the window with the help of a large mirror to reflect more light. She encouraged us to have more plants covering the soil in our gardens so that there is no room for unwanted flowers to grow and less weeding to do.
After the talk members were provided with tea, coffee, sandwiches, savoury nibbles and cakes by waitresses who made sure all the guests had enough to eat and drink on each of the eighteen tables. A question and answer session followed which was both informative and entertaining, especially when one member was asked when she had last eaten as the photo of her aspidistra indicated to Christine that the poor plant was starving.
Towards the end of the meeting the raffle was drawn and lots of lucky winners went home clutching prizes decorated with yellow and green ribbon. Just before leaving members were encouraged to check the back of their chairs for a red sticker which signified that they had won the lovely flower arrangement on their table.
